Patel nurse, Qld Health settle claim

The whistleblower nurse who exposed killer surgeon Jayant Patel has been granted a compensation payout from employer Queensland Health in a confidential out-of-court settlement.

Bundaberg nurse Toni Hoffman lodged a claim in the District Court last December, seeking $400,000 for medical expenses and loss of income and superannuation.

She says the stress of exposing Patel had taken its toll and caused her to miss work.

She also says she was forced to take annual leave to attend the surgeon’s trial.

A relieved Ms Hoffman says she’s happy with the outcome and feels she can move on.

“It’s been such a long journey and I’m just really happy that part of it’s over and I can just get on with my life now,” she told AAP.

“I was happy with the outcome.

“Everybody worked very hard, to be fair, that’s all I can say really,” she said.

“I’m very thankful to everybody who supported me.”

Ms Hoffman’s lawyer Peter Koutsoukis says his client suffered financially, professionally and personally.

The settlement would give her some financial security, he said.

“Toni is a hero to Queenslanders and she deserves to have some time to recover after many years of stress and poor health caused by this scandal,” Mr Koutsoukis said in a statement.

Patel was sentenced to seven years in prison in 2010 after he was found guilty of the manslaughter of three people and the grievous bodily harm of one person.

Ms Hoffman, head nurse at Bundaberg Base Hospital’s intensive care unit, alerted authorities to Patel’s alleged criminal malpractice in 2005.
