Parents must do better: Qld bus drivers

Queensland bus drivers are demanding parents take more responsibility, arguing they’re often unfairly blamed when children are left at bus stops.

Eight years after the abduction of Daniel Morcombe from a Sunshine Coast bus stop, the Queensland Bus Industry Council (QBIC) is calling for a task force to solve the problem.

Daniel’s remains were found in bushland last year, and a man was charged with his murder.

QBIC chief David Tape says it’s easy to point the finger solely at bus operators and drivers when children are left at bus stops, but it’s an issue for the entire community.

A bus driver can only be responsible for the time the bus is present and in transit, he argues.

“We really can’t accept responsibility for anything that’s outside of our control, and that’s travelling to a bus stop or whilst people wait at a bus stop,” he told the council’s conference on Tuesday.

“If we can’t control it we can’t be held responsible for it. However, we believe if we engage as a community we’ll come up with good solutions”.

Mr Tape said parents need to better supervise their children while waiting for buses.

He claims many recent reports of children being left at bus stops turn out to be false.

“It turned out the child was actually over the road at the shops buying lollies or behind the shelter and wasn’t visible to the driver,” he said.

“It is too simplistic to place the entire responsibility on the bus driver when parents, schools and the community at large all have a part to play.”

Drivers are calling on the state’s new Transport Minister Scott Emerson to set up a task force to engage all the relevant groups.

“I’m sure there’ll be a lot of emotion and issues floated across the table but we need to work through those to ensure we get a good outcome for our children,” he said.

He also said the federal government’s carbon tax could drive some businesses to the wall and stifle one of the solutions to reducing carbon emissions – buses.
