Parachute Regiment to return to Falklands for first time in 30 years

The first parachute unit to deploy as part of the Falkland Islands Roulement
Infantry Company will be B Company, 3 Para, which led the attack on Mount
Longdon. One of its sergeants, Ian McKay, was posthumously awarded the
Victoria Cross for his actions.

Veterans of the campaign have welcomed 3 Para’s return.

Mike O’Neill, who was a platoon commander during Longdon said it would
“reinforce to Argentine how seriously Britain is taking the sovereignty of
the islands”.

“It stands as a statement of strong intent. While I am sure that the
Argentines see anything we do down there as provocative we have to ensure
that they realise how serious we are.

“I think strong statements will help to prevent any further unnecessary loss
of life. Now is not the time for this government to send out mixed
messages.”
