Panetta in Afghanistan amid anti-US fury

Panetta began his two-day visit after landing at the Camp Bastion military base on Wednesday.

During the visit, the Pentagon chief is scheduled to meet US soldiers and commanders, as well as Afghan government officials.

The visit comes after a US trooper on Sunday opened fire on Afghan civilians inside their homes in the district of Panjwaii in the southern province of Kandahar, killing 16 of them and injuring several others.

According to the locals, however, as many as 18 civilians were killed.

On Monday, Panetta expressed regret over the incident, saying that the soldier responsible for the massacre would be brought to justice under the US military legal code.

On Tuesday, the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called for the punishment of those involved in the massacre.

“We expect that an investigation will rapidly establish the facts and that those responsible will be held accountable,” Ban said.

The latest string of incidents has further strained relations between Washington and Kabul.

Anti-American sentiments in Afghanistan have also risen due to the desecration of the Holy Qur’an in a US-run military air base last month.

Civilian casualties in Afghanistan have been a major source of tension between Kabul and Washington.
