On Saturday, the demonstrators staged a protest rally in the city of Multan, about 400 kilometers (250 miles) southwest of the Pakistani capital Islamabad, condemning the US drone attacks in the remote tribal region.
The rally was staged hours after five people lost their lives in a US drone raid in Miranshah, the main town in the North Waziristan tribal region of northwest Pakistan.
The protesters chanted anti-US slogans, and burnt a US flag as well as an effigy of US President Barack Obama. They also called on Islamabad to sever all forms of relationship with Washington.
They argued that the ongoing US drone attacks in northwest Pakistan undermine the authority of the Pakistani parliament and are a violation of the rights of the Pakistani people who strongly oppose the aerial attacks.
US President Barack Obama publically confirmed for the first time in late January that American drones operate inside Pakistan.
Obama said “a lot of these strikes have been in the FATA”, the acronym for Pakistan’s Federally Administered Tribal Areas.
The US claims the airstrikes target militants affiliated with the Taliban and al-Qaeda. But locals say civilians are the main victims.
