Pakistani women hold anti-US rally

The supporters of the Tehreek-e-Insaf or Movement for Justice demanded an end to the Pakistani government’s alliance with the US and called for the resignation of Prime Minister Raza Gilani.

“It is true that this is not our war. Pakistan’s foreign policy needs to be revisited. It needs to be changed to the needs and in the national interest of our people. It should not be dictated by foreign governments…” Tehreek-e-Insaf’s Fauzia Kasuri said.

According to a recent poll, the opposition party has become the most popular political party in the country.

The party is also calling on the government to not give in to increasing pressure to reopen supply lines to the US.

Islamabad closed the routes to the supplies destined for the 130,000-strong US-led force deployed in Afghanistan in response to deadly NATO airstrikes on November 26, 2011 that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers at two checkpoints on the Afghan border.

The raid prompted several anti-US demonstrations in Pakistani cities.

The November attacks also chilled the relations between the United States and Pakistan, and Pakistan subsequently boycotted an international conference on Afghanistan held in the German city of Bonn on December 5, 2011.

Pakistani lawmakers have held several meetings with the country’s high-ranking civilian and military officials in a bid to review the country’s relations with the US.
