Its spokesman, Ehsanullah Ehsan, said its primary objective was to free “special
members” – a reference to the 20 freed from death row.
Most had reached TTP bases in the North Waziristan and Orakzai tribal areas
adjacent to Bannu, he said.
The jail raid was the biggest attack on a Pakistani city by TTP militants
since they were ejected from the Swat Valley in 2009 and pummelled by army
counter terrorist operations.
TTP insiders said that they were given the opportunity to rebuild and
reorganise by the breakdown last November of intelligence sharing between US
and Pakistani security authorities, after 24 Pakistani troops died in a “friendly
fire” exchange with Nato forces.
The jail raid on Sunday was the first in a campaign that would target
government installations, they said.
