Pakistani MPs rally against government

The legislators and activists belonging to the country’s main opposition party, Pakistan’s Muslim League-Nawaz, demanded early elections and the resignation of President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani.

Chanting anti-government slogans, the protesters blamed the government for what they called mismanagement and failure to tackle the country’s economic and energy crisis.

Pakistan is currently in the midst of severe energy shortage with many parts of the country witnessing long power outages.

The opposition party does not consider Yousuf Raza Gilani as the country’s legitimate prime minister after he was convicted for refusal to reopen corruption cases against the president.

“This government should leave before the country is gone forever. We want to just build up the pressure. That’s a fundamental right of people of Pakistan to protest. If the parliament fails, if the parliament becomes dysfunctional, other institutions become dysfunctional. Then we must go to the streets,” Khawja Asif, an opposition lawmaker, told Press TV.

The opposition lawmakers also boycotted the Pakistani parliament budget proceedings and refused to attend the budget session of the parliament.

However, the government has rejected the opposition protest saying the lawmakers should attend the important budget proceedings.

“The budge session of parliament is the most difficult period, but since the opposition has decided to boycott the session and move away from the parliament to streets, I would say that the government should be grateful to the opposition because it is helping the government for the smooth and easy passage of the budget,” Mushahid Hussain, a member of the ruling coalition, said.
