Security officials said that unidentified gunmen opened fire on Intelligence Bureau Deputy Director Qamar Reza late on Saturday in the capital of the southern province of Sindh, which has experienced a wave of targeted killings in recent months, Xinhua reported.
The assailants later fled the scene and their whereabouts are unknown.
Security forces cordoned off the area and initiated a search operation after the attack. However, no arrests have been reported so far.
Reza was critically injured in the attack and was sent to Karachi’s main hospital, where he later died.
Despite the Pakistani government’s operations against Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants and associated groups, the TTP have still been able to spread their influence across various regions in the country and are responsible for the death of thousands of people.
According to local media outlets, over 35,000 Pakistanis have lost their lives in bombings and other militant attacks since 2001, when Pakistan entered an alliance with the US in the so-called war on terrorism.
Thousands more have been displaced by the wave of violence and militancy sweeping across the country.
