Pakistani army troops kill 24 militants

Clashes broke out on Tuesday when militants attacked security forces in the Malakhel and Dabori areas of Orakzai tribal region, which is situated in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and about 140 kilometers (86 miles) west of the Pakistani capital Islamabad.

Security forces responded with heavy gunfire that killed at least 17 militants and wounded several others.

Meanwhile, army forces killed seven militants in the Naseerabad district of the southwestern Balochistan province after they engaged in a fierce gun battle with the militants.

Over 35,000 Pakistanis have lost their lives in bombings and other militant attacks since 2001 when Pakistan entered an alliance with the US on the so-called war against terrorism, according to local media.

Since late 2009, there has been a surge in militant attacks in Pakistan.

Thousands more have been displaced by the wave of violence and militancy sweeping across the country.
