Pakistan tells US special envoy to stay away

A joint US-Afghan patrol, close to the border with Pakistan, called in an air strike after coming under fire.

A mix-up over coordinates meant they did not realise they were attacking a pair of Pakistan border posts.

American officials later expressed regret and sent condolences.

However, Pakistan is pushing for a full apology and has halted the movement of Nato supplies from its port of Karachi to two land crossings into Afghanistan.

The government is considering hiking taxes on the shipments if they do eventually resume.

Nato has been forced to use more expensive land routes through Central Asia for now as it resupplies more than 100,000 international troops.

At the same time, Pakistan’s government is gripped by political crisis.

With ministers under intense pressure from the country’s military and courts, observers believe there is little chance of a speedy resolution to the impasse with the US.
