Pakistan spy chief cancels visit to US

Newly-appointed head of Pakistan’s powerful Inter-Services Intelligence agency (ISI) Lt. Gen. Zaheer al-Islam was scheduled to meet his American counterpart, Director of Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) David H. Petraeus, during a visit to the US this week, the Washington Post reported Tuesday, quoting a Pakistani official.

Pakistan earlier handed down a 33-year jail sentence to Pakistani doctor Shakil Afridi convicted of treason for assisting CIA’s operatives with the US hunt for Osama bin Laden, a move which became the target of harsh criticism emanating from the White House.

The Pakistani military has claimed in a Monday statement, however, that the cancellation of spy chief’s visit to Washington was due to “pressing commitments” at home and that “there is no other reason.”

Citing a senior Pakistani official, the report further added that growing bilateral tensions over Afridi’s case as well as a long-brewing dispute over Islamabad’s refusal to reopen its territory to NATO supply convoys destined for the US-led forces in Afghanistan has contributed to the decision to cancel the trip.

The CIA and the ISI are working on a new date for the visit, said the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

The CIA has declined to comment on the issue.

Top American officials as well as several US lawmakers in Congress have expressed outrage at Pakistan’s punishment of Afridi, a 48-year-old government surgeon who allegedly aided the CIA by running a fake hepatitis vaccination drive to collect bin Laden’s DNA to verify his presence in Abbottabad prior to a US commando attack on his alleged residence.

Members of the US Congress and senior officials of President Barack Obama’s administration have urged Pakistan to pardon and release Afridi with some even implying that Islamabad is an ally of al-Qaeda.
