According to a Pakistan military official, over 100 terrorists based in Kunar province ambushed a military patrol inside Pakistan on Sunday. Fourteen intruders and six soldiers were killed in the attack, while seven soldiers were beheaded by the extremists after being captured. Four soldiers are still missing.
On Monday, the Pakistani army “strongly protested with their counterparts across the border for not taking action against miscreants present in safe haven in Afghanistan,” the military official said.
The Pakistani Foreign Ministry issued a statement saying the deputy head of mission of the Afghan Embassy in Islamabad was summoned to the Foreign Office and a strong protest was lodged over “the intrusion of militants from the Afghan side into Pakistani territory.”
The statement added that the Afghan diplomat was told, “The government of Afghanistan should take appropriate measures to prevent recurrence of similar incidents in future.”
The Pakistani prime minister also censured the deadly attack and said he would lodge a complaint with Afghan President Hamid Karzai.
“Pakistan has strongly protested with Afghanistan on the cross-border attacks and I will also take up this issue with Karzai,” Raja Pervez Ashraf told reporters in Karachi on Monday.
Thousands of Pakistanis have lost their lives in bombings and other militant attacks since the US-led war in Afghanistan began on October 7, 2001. The offensive removed the Taliban from power, but insecurity continues to rise across Afghanistan, despite the presence of about 130,000 US-led troops.
