Pakistan MPs appoint new premier

Ashraf, a former information and technology minister and a close ally of President Asif Ali Zardari, was elected on Friday by the National Assembly of Pakistan, the lower house announced.

Pakistani lawmakers endorsed Ashraf’s appointment by 211 votes in the 342-member legislative body, which is dominated by the main ruling Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).

Earlier on Friday, the PPP nominated Ashraf after a court issued an arrest warrant for the party’s first nominee, Makhdoom Shahabuddin.

The warrant against Shahabuddin was issued – hours after his nomination of the outgoing textile industry minister for the premier post – by an anti-narcotics judge over alleged illegal import of drugs.

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court ruled that Gilani was not eligible to hold office as premier or a lawmaker because he had disdained previous court orders to reopen corruption charges against Zardari.

The governing PPP has the necessary majority in parliament to elect a successor to Gilani.

Gilani’s disqualification spells a fresh political turmoil and the clash of institutions in Pakistan just months ahead of the widely-expected general elections.
