Pacific Brands confirms 100 job losses

PACIFIC Brands has confirmed that more than 100 jobs are to be shed at its Bonds and Berlei distribution centres in Sydney.

But the company said it was hopeful of creating a similar number of jobs at its new distribution centre in Melbourne, a spokesman for the company told AAP.

Eighteen forklift drivers and packers from the Berlei distribution centre at Wentworthville in western Sydney, that deals with bras and briefs, were told they would be losing their jobs.

Another 88 jobs will also be shed at the Bonds distribution centre at Minto in southwestern Sydney.

Previous media reports that jobs would be lost at the head office were incorrect, the spokesman said.

The brand will now be shifting operations to a new distribution centre at Truganina in Melbourne, where 76 full-time jobs have already been created.

“It’s close to rail, it’s close to the air and it’s close to the sea,” the spokesman said.

“It will allow us to operate a lot more efficiently.”

Construction on the new distribution centre began over a year ago, but the company spokesman said the decision to shed jobs in Sydney was made only today.

“People have lost their jobs, it’s never an easy decision,” he said.

“We are creating hopefully a similar number of jobs in Melbourne.”

All employees had been informed of their entitlements, he said.
