‘P5+1 urged to honor Istanbul pledges’

Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany have voiced optimism about finding common ground on how to resolve Tehran’s nuclear issue based on the Islamic Republic’s five-point proposal as well as the P5+1’s package, Hosseini told reporters in Rome on Friday.

The Iranian ambassador described the Moscow talks as a tremendous opportunity for Iran and the P5+1 to reach a strategic agreement.

The scheduled talks between Iran and the P5+1 group — the US, Britain, Russia, France, and China plus Germany — in Moscow will have desirable outcomes should P5+1 representatives show great determination to take crucial steps, Hosseini pointed out.

He further noted that Tehran expects the P5+1 to recognize its right to enrich uranium under the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) during Moscow negotiations.

A round of talks between Iran and the P5+1 was held in Istanbul on April 14. Both sides hailed the discussions as ‘constructive’ and agreed to hold another round of negotiations in Baghdad.

Iran and the six world powers wrapped up their meeting in Baghdad on May 24 after two days of negotiations.

The Iranian negotiating delegation was headed by the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Saeed Jalili, and the delegations of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany were headed by the EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton.

Iran and the P5+1 have agreed to hold another round of talks in Moscow on June 18 and 19.
