Referring to the beginning of the new round of talks between Iran and the P5+1 in Istanbul, Seyyed Hossein Naqavi Hosseini said Saturday that Iran has the upper hand in negotiations.
“This round [of talks] can provide a good opportunity for protecting the country’s national interests and the Islamic Republic should make the P5+1 understand that it is not a qualified authority to talk about the suspension or continuation of Iran’s nuclear activities,” Fars News Agency quoted him as saying.
The lawmaker, also a member of Iran Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, stated that the P5+1 should understand that Iran is only accountable before the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
“The IAEA is the sole authority which can talk [with Iran] in this regard and raise questions and discuss ambiguities,” he added.
Naqavi Hosseini said Iranian nuclear negotiators should also focus more on disarmament in the region and countries which have not signed the Non-Proliferation Treaty and pose a nuclear threat to regional nations.
The first round of the new comprehensive talks between Iran and the P5+1 began in Turkish city of Istanbul on Saturday morning after a 15-month hiatus.
European Union sources described the atmosphere of the talks as “positive.” However, sources close to the Iranian delegation said it is too early to describe the talks as positive and the viewpoints of all sides need to be heard before passing judgment.
The second round of the new negotiations will be held in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, the date of which will be announced at the end of the Istanbul meeting.
