P5+1 negotiators arrive in Baghdad

The negotiators of the P5+1 – Russia, China, France, Britain, the US and Germany – arrived in Baghdad on Wednesday.

EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton also arrived in Baghdad earlier Wednesday.

The P5+1 states are also scheduled to hold a meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki.

Iraq’s government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh has announced that Ashton is expected to hold meetings with Maliki and Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Saeed Jalili.

The negotiations between Iran and the P5+1 will begin after the meetings.

The latest round of talks between Tehran and the P5+1 was held in the Turkish city of Istanbul on April 14. Both sides hailed the discussions as constructive.

Iran and the P5+1 had previously held two rounds of talks, one in Geneva, Switzerland, in December 2010, and another in Istanbul, Turkey, in January 2011.
