Our Ancient Religion

By A. Rud Mills

Once upon a time our Nordic ancestors, striving continually with Nature and natural forces, gained vivid ideas of the Great One who inspired and expressed Himself in men and all other manifestations of Nature.

They called the Great One ‘God’. They felt that though they knew God existed, he was yet extended beyond their powers of understanding and description. But still, there was something of God which in some measure they could understand. They called that something Wotan, Goddin, Odin, Woden, a diminutive of the word God. Thus it was that our ancestors prayed to that of God which they could understand and which was manifested to them; they prayed to Wotan and they called themselves Wotanists.

They perceived the Thor or Christos power in God – the power which moved the Sun and brings to all things, including Man, life and death. They perceived Freyja – the beautiful mother power – the healing, the ever-forgiving. They saw the Freyja power in the love of a woman for her child, the love of a tigress for her cub and even the hard shell the tree provides for its seed.

They worshipped their Father God – that is, their Father Spirit – whose representatives in the flesh they were. They believed that all creatures were expressions of various Powers in God and believed that all races of men had their different and valuable parts to play in the mighty orchestra of God.

The early Greeks and Romans were Nordics. Then, they and their Northern brethren were the light-givers of the world. Their chief days for religious festivals were the Winter Solstice, the so-called Birthday of the Year (December 21), the day on which there was most light, the Summer Solstice, the days of the equinoxes (22 of September and March). May Day and Eostre, when Nature manifested its resurrection after the harsh Northern Winter. But then, almost 2000 years ago – arose a philosophy which has since demoralized and all but ruined our own civilization.

This ruinous philosophy taught that the Good was separate from this world; that Man was separated from God; that Heaven and Earth were opposites; that all Men were equal and equally evil; that God was disgusted with Man and regretted that he had ever created him. It taught that Man was lost and had no health in him, and that God ruled only in Heaven, and that the Earth was cursed.

This philosophy split Man’s attitude towards Reality into two parts, and made Man, instead of a proud part of God’s world, possessed of a will to excel in this life, a cringing dwarf, pleading for mercy for himself and utterly careless of the disastrous social results which such paranoiac neglect of Reality brought to the world.

The most effective purveyors of this dualism were some learned Jews. One of them – later called Saint Paul – declared that a fellow Jew from Palestine had come from Heaven to save Man and that this personage was the Christos or Thor power. Paul and his fellow Jews travelled as missionaries far and wide. They and their teachings were eventually accepted by the Nordics. Gradually, Nordics forgot their ancient faith and beliefs. Even the sign of their religion – the cross, symbolizing the Hammer of Thor – was stolen by the new religion. It thus changed its meaning from strength, manliness and pride to suffering, shame and sorrow, in other words, from life to death.

Now the Nordics cry, “Salvation is of the Jews”. Palestine has become their “Holy Land” and its inhabitants have become “God’s Chosen People”.

Differences among Mankind are attacked by stern laws and priestly edicts. Thus has arisen the grave problem of racial intermixture. In order to destroy forever differences among men, many fanatics work tirelessly to bring on wholesale intermarriages between races.

The Nordic people have lost their Father Spirit and their knowledge of God and of themselves. They have lost their source of strength by losing their God. While they shout and sing at their worship of the “Chosen People”, their identity becomes forgotten, their will to live ever more diminished and their kind faces imminent extinction.

The Wotanist view of Life can save all Mankind, not only the Nordics. Wotan’s dawn is stirring and the Hammer of Thor, smiting fear and confusion, will bring sanity, health and the beauty of natural order to an anxious world.
