Hollywood’s fundraising during Oscar week has brought sustainable fashion to the party. Women’s dresses from Oliver Tolentino’s Eco-Couture collection were on display at Global Green’s party and across town at Vanity Fair’s dinner for Oxfam International, Colin and Livia Firth hosted her “Green Carpet Challenge” at the Chateau Marmont, with Italian designer Ermenegildo Zegna.
Showcasing menswear, luxury designs by Zegna dressed several male guests in his smart sustainable suits and dress shirts, including Colin Firth, John Krasinski, Kenneth Branagh, Djimon Hounsou, Oscar nominee Demián Bichir, and President of Oxfam, Raymond Offenheiser among the star-studded guests. Since 1910, Zegna’s fine textiles source fibers directly from their markets of origin. Among Zegna’s green practices, patterns are designed for efficient cutting to reduce fabric waste and scrap material is recycled into new textiles.
An Oxfam Ambassador and long-time environmentalist, Livia Firth co-founded the “Green Carpet Challenge” with British journalist Lucy Siegle, asking the world’s top fashion designers to marry glamor and ethics with creativity and environmentalism. Since http://2009’s Golden Globes, Livia has attended all red carpet events dressed with sustainable style. In 2012, she’s brought aboard Chanel, Tom Ford, Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent, Paul Smith, Armani, and Valentino.
For the 2012 BAFTA Awards (Britain’s Oscars) Viola Davis (The Help) wore Valentino’s first custom-made eco gown and nominee Michael Fassbender (Shame) joined Livia’s husband Colin Firth in Armani’s sustainable tuxedos of organic wool with recycled touches.

At Global Green’s Pre-Oscar party in Hollywood Oliver Tolentino showed off his pastel Eco-Couture gowns, created with hand-woven fibers of pineapple leaves, Manila hemp called abaca, Philippine silk, and water lily. Some of his confections are hand-dyed with coconut husk, seeds and nuts.
For the Oscars, Missi Pyle from the silent film The Artist, will wear an eco-conscious gown by the winner of the “Red Carpet Green Dress” design contest, an initiative by Suzy Amis Cameron (James Cameron’s wife). Venezuelan-born and Miami-based Valentina Delfino was the selected designer from hundreds of worldwide applications in the competition.
“As artists, I believe it is our job to show the world that we not only care about creating incredible art,” said actress Pyle, who will wear accessories by Stella McCartney, “…we can make something beautiful that is also sustainable.”
The Red Carpet Green Dress contains Peace Silk Chiffon, dyed with natural mineral dye and lined with recycled polyester. The cruelty–free silk is created through a process that allows the silkworm to emerge naturally. Zem Joaquin of ecofabulous assisted in the selection of the winning garment which got the thumbs up from Cradle-to-Cradle and the NRDC.
