Bin Laden stated that “every effort” should be spent on planning and
executing attacks within America. He instructed Rahman to “ask the brothers
in all regions if they have a brother … who can operate in the U.S. [He
should be able to] live there, or it should be easy for him to travel
there.”
He noted several problems in al-Qaeda’s media strategy. The Obama
administration “have largely stopped using the phrase ‘the war on terror’ in
the context of not wanting to provoke Muslims,” he noted, instead they were
increasingly phrasing the war as against al-Qaeda, apparently damaging its
name amongst Muslims.
Bin Laden proposed several alternative names for al-Qaeda, the first
suggestion being “Taifat al-tawhid wal-jihad,” or Monotheism and Jihad
Group.
The group hoped to launch an attack on the 10 year anniversary of the war in
Afghanistan on Sep 11 2011. Adam Gadahn, one of bin Laden’s advisers told
him which television stations would be the best vehicle for an anniversary
video.
“It should be sent for example to ABC, CBS, NBC, and CNN and maybe PBS and
VOA. As for Fox News let her die in her anger,” Gadahn wrote.
“From a professional point of view, they are all on one level — except (Fox
News) channel, which falls into the abyss as you know, and lacks
objectivity, too.”
US officials stated the plot against Obama and Petraeus was not seen as a
serious threat.
