The organiser of last year’s disastrous ultra-marathon in Western Australia’s Kimberley is to appear before an inquiry in Perth tomorrow.

Five people were burned when a bushfire swept across the course last September.

Two women, Kate Sanderson and Turia Pitt, suffered life threatening injuries and have spent months in hospital as a result.

Both flew to Perth to attend the inquiry and testified they thought they would die as the flames engulfed them.

Their injuries have given them permanent disabilities.

A parliamentary committee is investigating whether the event’s organiser, RacingThePlanet, and government agencies, did enough to minimise the risk to competitors’ safety.

Earlier today, Premier Colin Barnett said the company should present its case in person to the inquiry.

It had provided a written submission but nobody from the company had appeared personally.

Following negotiations with the committee, a RacingThePlanet representative will now front the inquiry.

The committee says this will happen on Wednesday morning.

Mr Barnett says the State Government may have to take more responsibility for managing events that it agrees to sponsor.

Tourism WA, through EventsCorp, supported last year’s ultra-marathon.

The Premier says the Government will take note of the inquiry’s findings.

“As a sponsor, along with other sponsors, you would not expect to take any sort of managerial responsibility for the event,” he said.

“But, maybe one of the outcomes of this inquiry will be that Government, if it is going to sponsor, actually has to take that extra step that no other sponsor is expected to.”
