Opposition returns to Moscow’s streets to resume protest against President Vladmir Putin

As demonstrators trailed away, Sergei Udaltsov, a radical left leader who has
been arrested for trying to occupy city spaces in the past, asked people to
stay with him on the square “if they want to.” Few showed much
enthusiasm for the idea.

The march was the latest in a series of anti-government demonstrations that
have rocked the Russian capital since what many claimed were fraudulent
elections last December.

Organisers claimed a turnout of up to 100,000, though police said the crowd
was only 11,000 strong at its peak.

Whatever the true figure, the resumption of the protests will be hailed by the
opposition as evidence that anti-Putin sentiment remains strong.

But critics point out the movement has failed to translate into meaningful
political gains.
