Papua New Guinea’s Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill, has told the country’s public servants their failure to do their jobs is “unacceptable”.
Mr O’Neill has boosted spending on health, education and infrastructure in a bid to halt PNG’s declining service delivery.
But he says many public servants are not playing their part.
“This is happening all throughout the country. I’ll give you a good example; the example of the Highlands highway,” he said.
“We know how important that particular infrastructure is to the nation. For 40 years we’ve been talking about rebuilding that particular asset.
“And yet today there’s not even one single design, not one single costing, not one single document where a government can take on ownership of it to rebuild the highway.
“This is unacceptable. People are not doing their jobs. Our country, taxpayers, are paying us to do this job.”
Speaking at the groundbreaking for the South Pacific Games village in Port Moresby, Mr O’Neill said PNG’s international reputation is at stake.
“We have many challenges in this country, now get off your backside and start getting this project off the ground.”
Mr O’Neill has warned public servants to lift their game or face the axe.
