One Nation vows to keep Qld govt honest

The One Nation party will work to ensure the state government delivers on its promises, the party’s candidate for the Brisbane seat of Ashgrove says.

One Nation state director Ian Nelson announced on Thursday he will vie for the hotly contested seat in the upcoming state election.

Liberal National Party leader Campbell Newman wants to enter parliament via Ashgrove but needs a 7.1 per cent swing against Labor’s Kate Jones to win power.

Mr Nelson is tipping an LNP victory at the election and said One Nation will keep the victors honest.

“We’re going to make sure Can Do Newman is Will Do Newman,” he said.

One Nation was chasing the vote of the 30 per cent of voters disenfranchised with the two major political parties and they would endeavour to represent these members of the electorate, Mr Nelson said.

He said the fact that he lived and worked in Ashgrove would play strongly in his favour but admitted the LNP leader had a distinct advantage.

“He’s got a huge machine. He’s got the mining companies and the LNP behind him,” he said.

“The minor parties find it hard to compete but we’re going to do the best we can.”

Mr Nelson will also be up against local doctor Sandra Bayley for the Queensland Greens and an unnamed member of Katter’s Australian Party.

The election is due in March but can be held as late as June.

One Nation also announced candidates for six southeast Queensland electorates: Beaudesert – Jim Savage, security chief; Cook – Jim Evans, post office owner; Capalaba – David Chidgey, draftsman; Logan – Troy Aggett, former federal policeman now owning a floor laying business on the Gold Coast; Southport – Douglas Stuart, event management business owner, and; Gympie – Santo Ferraro, post office owner on the Sunshine Coast.
