One killed in clashes in Benghazi

“One person was killed and at least five others were wounded,” medical official Basma Mohammed told AFP on Friday.

However, the chairman of the Supreme Security Committee of Benghazi, Fawzi Wanis, said “matters were brought under control and the clashes between the two sides are over.”

Hundreds of people held a demonstration after Friday prayers in support of a federal system of governance and a plan to divide the country into three self-governing regions.

The supporters and opponents of federalism threw stones at each other and exchanged gunfire.

Libya had a federal system from 1951 to 1963 under King Idris Senussi’s rule, when the country was divided into three units — Cyrenaica, Tripolitania, and Fezzan.

However, the ruling National Transitional Council (NTC) is opposed to the proposal to establish a federal system.

On Friday, March 9, thousands of NTC supporters took to the streets of Benghazi and chanted slogans against federalism and King Idris.

On the same day, thousands of people held a demonstration in Tripoli and chanted “No, no to federalism” and “Libya is one.”
