Germany’s National Office for Statistics has said that around 16 million Germans fell victim to poverty or social exclusion in 2013.
According to the survey “Living in Europe” (EU-SILC)-2013 published on Tuesday, one in every five Germans, 20.3 percent of the country’s population, were victims of poverty in 2013.
The latest figures were similar to those of the previous year (19.6 percent) and have been relatively constant since 2008.
However, the figures did show that women (21.9 percent) were more affected by poverty than men (18.8 percent).
In July, Germany’s parliament approved the country’s first minimum wage, which affected many laborers.
The figures for 2013 were calculated with the use of the percentages of the people at risk of poverty, those suffering from significant material deprivation, and people residing in households with very low labor participation.
European countries are struggling with an economic crisis that erupted in early 2008, leaving millions unemployed and in financial distress.
According to official figures, over 125 million people across the European Union, about a quarter of the bloc’s entire population, either live in poverty or are at the risk of poverty.
