Olympic lanes anger London taxi drivers

Around 30 miles of dedicated Olympic lanes will be reserved for Olympic officials, sponsors, and competitors in their vehicles and even taxi drivers are not allowed to use them.

Those taxi drivers who stray into the so-called Zil lanes can be forced to pay fines as high as £130.

Taxi drivers, however, argue that they have the right to use Olympic lanes. With just hours to go before the Game’s opening ceremony, taxi drivers mounted a third protest in London as the British police restricted their demonstration.

“The Metropolitan police took the decision based on concerns that, if the protest were to go ahead in the time and location specified by the group, it would cause serious disruption to the life of the community,” a police statement said.

The cabbies of London have already demonstrated on 2 occasions that included one incident bringing traffic to a standstill outside the Houses of Parliament. Police officials fear that any sort of demonstration will be hazardous to London’s fragile traffic conditions and closures of main roads during the Olympic Games.
