A schoolboy has triggered a tsunami of excitement after being hailed the ‘youngest surfing champion in the UK’ aged just eight.

Gifted Ollie Turrell was first taken surfing at 18 months by his dad Richie, a Royal Navy lieutenant.

He quickly developed a talent for the sport and beat a local surf team and several adults – including his dad – to take first place in a competition when he was six.

Ollie hits the water most days at Gwithian, one of Cornwall’s top surf spots.

He first tasted success at the National Trust Swellboard Classic competition – beating a field of 49 adult entrants to the top spot.

His granddad Mervyn Sullivan, 74, from Hayle, Cornwall, said: ‘It was a fancy dress surfing competition, but it is still serious surfing and Ollie beat a lot of people, including his dad.

‘I think he is probably the youngest surfing champion in the UK. I am incredibly proud of him – his dad is an excellent surfer so Ollie was always going to get into it.’

The Swellboard Classic takes place at Godrevy and is scored on a handicap basis, so everyone has a chance of winning.

Ollie saw off everyone in the under 16s with a series of tricks such as forward rolls and riding backwards.

He scored enough to win the competition overall and beat the 49 other entrants.

Richie, 37, used to run the Royal Navy surf team and takes Ollie down to the beach every day from their home in nearby Connor Downs when he isn’t serving overseas.

Grandfather-of-two Mr Sullivan added: ‘He is a complete waterbaby and an amazing surfer for his age. He has remarkable balance and skill.’

Ollie is due to appear on the ITV series Cornwall With Caroline Quentin on Monday.

Bless him, what a clever lad and a truly exhilarating sport.

At what stage are these English people going to pay for using Kernow assets for their own advantage

His dad is a hottie – yum yum! Is everyone going to get all upset about a young boy on a surfboard now? I fully expect the outrage to commence in 10, 9, 8….
