Newly-elected ACTU secretary Dave Oliver says he won’t tolerate bad governance within the union movement.
Mr Oliver was confirmed as the ACTU’s new secretary at its congress in Sydney on Tuesday and immediately added to an outpouring of anger among delegates over the scandal unfolding at the Health Services Union (HSU).
“I share the anger that’s being expressed here today,” Mr Oliver told the congress.
“I’m not going to tolerate bad governance in our movement that sees our members’ money misused by individuals.
“I’ll be moving a resolution tomorrow that sets standards to protect our members’ money from anyone who wants to break the law.”
Mr Oliver was confirmed as the ACTU’s new secretary after a delegate vote and formally begins his role on May 24.
Ged Kearney won another term as ACTU president.
Earlier, Ms Kearney told the congress that the union movement must take a zero tolerance approach to corruption following the HSU scandal.
Mr Oliver, the outgoing secretary of the Australian Manufacturing Workers’ Union, said the union movement was not big enough.
“While we’re growing in numbers, we’re losing the battle in density and 20 per cent union membership is not enough,” he said.
“And our strength and our ability to reach out to the community comes from our size.”
Mr Oliver recalled how his passion for improving workplace conditions had been sparked by the death of a colleague on a Sydney construction site during the 1980s.
“John Franklin fell five storeys to his death and it made me angry,” he said.
“We didn’t just mourn, but we organised and it’s experiences like John’s death and the results of that action that have given me the passion to stand up for workers’ rights.”
