nsnbc : The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), called for a boycott of products produced in or by illegal Israeli settlements in Palestine to pressure Israel to end its occupation.
During the 5th Extraordinary OIC Summit on Palestine and Jerusalem in the Indonesian capital Jakarta on March 7, 2016, the OIC issued the 23-point Jakarta Declaration. Point 16 of the declarations calls on the international community to support the boycott of products produced in or by illegal Israeli settlements. The OIC’s call for the boycott of settlement products comes as both the United Kingdom and the United States are in the process of adopting legislation that bans calls for or participation in boycotts under the umbrella of the international Boycott Divestment Sanctions (BDS) campaign.
Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi told the press that the declaration comprises a number of concrete steps toward supporting Palestine in its struggle to gain independence. The OIC also urges the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to address the issue of Israel’s illegal occupation and to provide protection for the Palestinian people.
OIC member States also declared their plan to establish an intergovernmental group of legal experts to examine ways and methods for referral of individual human rights violations in Palestine to appropriate legal bodies, and to provide advocacy for the State of Palestine in international institutions. OIC members also pledged to increase financial assistance and capacity building to bolster Palestinian governmental institutions.
The OIC condemned the restriction of access to worship at the Al-Aqsa mosque and denounced Israel for the attempt to Judaize the mosque, among others through spatial and temporal divisions at the Al-Aqsa which is among Islam’s most holy sites. The OIC also stressed that Israeli construction and excavations around and beneath the mosque endangered its foundations. The OIC declaration also calls on the Palestinian Factions, most predominantly Al-Fatah and Hamas to reach unity to achieve an end to the Israeli occupation. The 5th Extraordinary OIC Summit on Palestine was attended by 605 delegates from 57 OIC member States as well as from two international organizations.
