OHSU creates world’s first primate chimeric offspring

Three chimeric monkeys created by scientists at Oregon Health and Science University represent a stepping stone for understanding stem cells and their differences species to species.

Monkeys Roku, Hex and Chimero are called chimeric, or genetically mixed, because they are comprised of tissue coming from two different embryos of stem cells.

The impactful findings, which are to be published in the journal Cell, are multifold but the monkeys themselves are considered the world’s first primate chimeric offspring.

“This paper shows, I guess, the ability of early embryonic stem cells–that actually reside in early embryos–their ability actually to develop and form a whole organism,” said Shoukhrat Mitalipov, Ph.D, an associate scientist at OHSU’s Oregon National Primate Research Center in Hillsboro.

Since the study proves a difference between rodent and primate stem cell functions, Mitalipov and other researchers are optimistic for what this means to healing various human ailments, even developing usable organs.

“Stem cell therapies hold great promise for replacing damaged nerve cells in those who have been paralyzed due to a spinal cord injury or for example, in replacing dopamine-producing cells in Parkinson’s patients who lose these brain cells resulting in disease,” said Mitalipov, citing two other examples.

In media files released by OHSU, one of the chimeric monkeys can be seen clutching a rolled up white towell as a researcher in labratory garb holds the tiny, squealing marvel for the cameras. And later on, spread out on towells on the ground, Roku and Hex become intrigued with a camera and try to climb it.

The research for this project was funded by OHSU and the National Institutes of Health.
