While the London Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG) attributed the issue to empty accredited seating areas there are speculations that the problem has to do with expensive tickets and the resultant lack of enthusiasm by fans.
Such speculations specially gained force after a huge crowd attended the London streets where they could watch cycling road race take place without any tickets.
Meanwhile, the gaps were smaller in cheaper seats located higher in the spectator stands while most of the empty seats constituted those in the lower and more expensive rows.
“It’s a shame this happened, but we are going to do everything we can to make sure we fill up these stadia,” Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt said.
The empty seats were spotted in several disciplines including swimming, volleyball, badminton, gymnastics, handball and basketball on Saturday.
This is while ticket box offices at venues had queues of people waiting to buy tickets for their favorite sports.
Hunt also said the empty seats were sold out but their ticket-holders did not appear adding “we are looking at this very urgently at the moment.”
He also said they are considering making such tickets available to the public in the future events.
