Occupy LA slams growing deportations

Occupy Los Angeles activists and protesters gathered to call attention to the rise in deportations which they say aim at non-violent criminals such as the recent deportation of a Latino mother of two.

“They’re being sent to another country while the children stay here [in the US]. This is a crisis and cannot be ignored,” Occupy LA activist Carlos Marroquin said.

Like many others Blanca Cardenas, the wife of a US citizen, was arrested and deported late February after she challenged an eviction order issued by Bank of America.

This is while the Immigrations and Customs Enforcement confirms Cardenas was deported on because she had been living in the country illegally for nine years.

“In this case, what happened with Blanca, she had applied for modification, she was deceived like they do many other home owners, and eventually the Bank of America ended up selling the property to an investor,” Marroquin added.

Protesters have been holding similar rallies against a pattern of anti-immigrant laws which have already passed legislation in numerous states throughout the country.

Protesters say the country’s anti-immigrant laws are against some of America’s most important civil rights achievements, pushing the country back to racial hatred and division.
