“We believe the current US strategy jeopardizes our long-term national security goals,” said the letter, signed by 27 bipartisan experts on Wednesday.
The experts advised Obama to pay more attention to economic and political concerns that would better serve Yemeni stability and US interests, “rather than a primary focus on counterterrorism efforts and direct military involvement.”
Anti-US sentiment runs high in Yemen, basically stemming from the drone strikes in the country’s southern regions.
They also cautioned that the assassination drone strikes are not a “sustainable solution” and do not “address the underlying causes that have propelled such forces to find fertile ground in Yemen.”
“The Yemeni people need to know that their country is more than a proxy battleground,” the experts wrote.
In May, US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta for the first time admitted the use of drones in Yemen.
The United States has launched frequent drone attacks not just in Yemen but also in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Somalia.
The attacks have left thousands of people dead over the past few years.
Washington claims it is targeting militants but witness reports and figures provided by local officials indicate that civilians are the main victims of the assaults.
