US President Barack Obama was greeted by ecstatic school children in the foyer of Canberra’s Parliament House as he began his first official visit to Australia.
Mr Obama had arrived on Air Force One at the Fairbairn defence establishment at 3.10pm (AEDT) on Wednesday.
He went first to his hotel to freshen up after a 10-hour flight from Hawaii before making his way to Capital Hill at 4.30pm in his personal bomb-proof transport car, known as “The Beast”.
On the Parliament House forecourt, the president was greeted by Governor-General Quentin Bryce and Prime Minister Julia Gillard, as a 21 gun salute sounded and helicopters hovered overhead.
The US and Australian national anthems were played and he inspected army, navy and air force servicemen and women from the Federation Guard.
Mr Obama met the Speaker of the House Harry Jenkins, the President of the Senate John Hogg, Opposition Leader Tony Abbott and Defence Force Chief General David Hurley and others.
He then went inside Parliament House to sign the prime minister’s visitors book but was immediately waylaid by the 140 school children in a section of the main foyer.
The Year 5 and 6 students were from Dungog Public in NSW and Darley Primary in Bacchus Marsh, in Victoria.
As he walked through the door with Ms Gillard at his side he spotted the kids and exclaimed: “Whoa! Hello everyone!”
He mingled with the excited children for a few minutes, telling them: “Fantastic. Well, wonderful to meet you guys. Thank you so much.”
Darley Primary principal Anne Runnalls said the school found out about the plan to meet the president last week.
“I gather they have chosen us because we are a very great school,” she told reporters.
The children only found out they were going to Canberra on Wednesday.
Mr Obama had to tear himself away to go to the visitors book, which he signed left handed.
He spent a bit of time over his entry, as Ms Gillard looked on smiling.
Mr Obama then waved to dozens of parliament staff on the first floor balcony overlooking the foyer, provoking loud cheers.
The president and prime minister moved off into the building to hold a bilateral meeting.
During the 26-hour presidential visit, the leaders are expected to make an announcement on strengthening miliary ties between Australia and the US.
A joint Australian-US media conference is due to be held around 6pm (AEDT).
Also on hand to greet the president on Wednesday were Australia’s ambassador to the US Kim Beazley and the US ambassador Jeffrey Bleich.
