Obama not to attend summit in Russia

The Monday announcement by White House spokesman Jay Carney was made a few days after Russia’s newly reelected President Vladimir Putin said that he would be too busy with domestic affairs and cabinet appointments to make a planned visit to the US later this month, when he was to hold high-profile talks with Obama while attending a G8 summit at the Camp David retreat.

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, who swapped his position with Putin in the recent elections, is due to partake in the G8 meeting on May 18-19 instead of President Putin.

Obama was reportedly not expected to make the trip to Russia for the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting in September since it comes soon following the Democratic National Convention in the US State of North Carolina early September, considered the most significant presidential campaign event before the country’s national presidential election on the first Tuesday of next November.

American officials noted that Russians expressed understanding about Obama’s decision not to attend the APEC summit at a peak time for his political campaign to win reelection.

Both sides, however, have stated that Putin and Obama will hold their first meeting after Putin’s return to power on the sidelines of the G20 summit, scheduled for next month in Mexico.
