‘Obama liable for Afghan war failures’

US military forces in Afghanistan remain in a very shaky and vulnerable position and Obama will definitely fail to reap any benefit from the American aggression and occupation of the country, said Deputy Chairman of the Iranian Armed Forces’ Joint Chiefs of Staff Brigadier General Masoud Jazayeri on Wednesday.

He said the US has suffered heavy blows since the beginning of its military occupation of Afghanistan, adding that especially, in the course of the ongoing presidential campaign in the US, Obama must be held liable for the many failures of his policies in the war-ravaged country.

Referring to the recent desecration of the holy Qur’an by American troops in Afghanistan, the senior Iranian military authority emphasized that the incident will set the stage for a series of developments, managed by the people of Afghanistan, which will emerge against American aggressors.

People of Afghanistan and other Muslims will deal with the US burning of the holy Qur’an, and Washington will definitely pay, at the right time, the price for desecrating the Qur’an, he added.

On February 21, US troops at the Bagram airbase torched copies of the Muslim holy book they had taken from Afghan prisoners held in the huge military compound.

The desecration ignited days of anti-US protests, during which nearly 40 people died in Afghanistan.

President Obama apologized for the incident.

The desecration of the holy Qur’an underscores the insensitivity of the US-led forces about the cultural and religious values and rituals of Afghanistan, more than 10 years after they invaded the Asian nation to remove the Taliban from power.

Lack of security continues to climb across Afghanistan despite the presence of nearly 150,000 US-led forces in the war-torn country.

In addition, the United Nations reported in February that 2011 was the deadliest year on record for Afghan civilians. The death toll climbed eight percent compared to the previous year and was roughly double the figure for 2007.
