While talk of a presidential impeachment is nothing new in the nation’s capital, a three-scandal week gives the topic more realism.
Under President Barack Obama’s watch as commander-in-chief, the recent scandals have included the Benghazi, Libya terrorist attack, the more recent scandal in which the IRS targeting of conservative non-profit groups, and the most recent scandal in which many Associated Press reporters have had their phone records sought after by the United States Justice Department.
The long-running accusations of President Obama’s and his administration’s blatant overreach as well as the long-standing criticism of the president and his administration not being transparent in their dealings with the American public and the press are coming to a head.
The results of the current scandals in the nation’s capital which shed a very dim spotlight on the White House and its chief occupant are a number of governmental committees challenging the actions of the current executive branch, thereby putting the White House in the unwanted position of defense.
As soon as Wednesday, Attorney General Eric Holder will be before a House Judiciary Committee hearing.
Additionally, on Friday, the government’s Oversight and Government Reform committee and the Ways and Means committee will be looking into the IRS’s unfair treatment of political non-profits on the political right. Answers need to be found as to why the agency – via former Commissioner Douglas Shulman – said that the IRS was, in fact, not politically targeting groups just over a year ago when it is now known that the higher-ups in the agency has known for years.
Politico reports that five different committees are now investigating the Benghazi, Libya scandal that has swept the White House. Additionally, the Ways and Means committee is probing Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius’s raising of millions of dollars for the purpose of promoting Obamacare (the Affordable Care Act).
Astonishingly, approximately one-third of the committees in the United States House are currently investigating the Obama administration.
Regarding the 9-11 attack on Benghazi, Libya, former Admiral Mike Mullen and former Ambassador Thomas Pickering are expected to testify regarding the actions of the United States’ State Department after the terrorist attack. Also, the Energy and Commerce committee will engage in a hearing into the accusation that Secretary Kathleen Sebelius was raised literally millions of dollars in cash from corporate and foundation donors to promote Obamacare. Then, officials from the Internal Revenue Service have already claimed – in testimony to a couple of committees at hearings – that the governmental agency had not targeted conservative groups. Truth be told, Lois Lerner – a senior IRS official – has known about the targeting of conservative groups for almost two years. The IRS scandal is expected to go to full committee and the issue could last for a long time.
