Obama grants fundraiser top position

A Maryland lawyer, Broas, who has helped raise more than 500,000 USD for the Obama’s reelection campaign, is yet another contributing bundler to receive a diplomatic job in the Obama administration.

Obama, who has used almost every occasion to criticize the role of money in politics, campaigned on what he called “the most sweeping ethics reform in history.”

However, his own comment hasn’t stopped him from providing his biggest bundlers, who are actively contributing to his campaign, with administration posts.

Following in a presidential tradition maintained by previous presidents, Obama is frequently rewarding his fundraisers with prestigious positions.

At least 24 bundlers have been given posts as foreign ambassadors, including in Finland, Australia, Portugal and Luxembourg.

The adminstration argues that “the most qualified candidates who represent Americans from all walks of life” are being chosen for these posts.

This is while, the Foreign Service Act of 1980, states that “contributions to political campaigns should not be a factor in the appointment of an individual as a chief of mission.”

The incumbent president has appointed 59 ambassadors who were not career Foreign Service officers, and of those, 40 percent were bundlers.

The US president offered administration jobs to more than half of his biggest fundraisers in his 2008 presidential campaign, according to officials.
