An elderly driver was being questioned by police after he drove the wrong way down a motorway before he crashed into a police officer.

Officers chased the pensioner for 20 miles the wrong way down the M42 before colliding with the car on the hard shoulder just after 1.20am.

The 80-year-old driver’s grey Mitsubishi Colt then struck a police officer who was on foot which left him needing hospital treatment.

Collision: The pensioner was pursued down one of the busiest stretches of motorway in Britain, pictured between junctions 3 and 7, only coming to a halt after hitting a police officer.

Officers rushed to the M42 after the man was spotted careering towards oncoming traffic.

Worried motorists dialled 999 after the car narrowly avoided cars as it travelled the wrong way on the northbound carriageway towards the M5.

Officers from the Central Motorway Police Group formed a rolling road block from junction 5 near Solihull, West Midland.

They pursued the car for 20 miles before ‘spinning’ the car by hitting it on the hard shoulder near Droitwich, Worcestershire.

The man, who has not been named, was taken to hospital where he was treated for an existing medical condition, police said.

Collision: The 80-year-old man, driving a Mitsubishi Colt motorcar, like the one pictured, was taken to hospital after the incident

Chief Inspector Carl Flynn, of the Central Motorway Police Group, said: ‘Our officers acted quickly and decisively to try and stop the motorist from posing a further threat to other road users and himself.

‘The nature of the man’s driving was of great cause for concern, and despite the road block the car was still driven erratically and dangerously in the wrong direction into stationary traffic.

‘Our officers bravely intercepted the vehicle and spun the car so that it was then facing in the right direction.

‘Unfortunately the vehicle then collided with a police officer, who was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

‘After making further enquiries it appears the elderly gentleman was unwell, and we will now investigate whether his condition played any part in these events.’

The man, from South Staffordshire, was detained and taken to hospital where he was kept in for observations.

Here we go again. This problem will only get worse with an an ageing population. I do think there should be tougher checks in place above 75 to ensure that elderly drivers are safe. This isn’t about knocking the elderly, its a matter of safety. Thank goodness no one was seriously injured or killed.

HOW MANY MORE WILL DO THIS? If these people are determined to carry on before their sell-by date, then there must be some sort of re-test, including motorway driving. Personally I think they should all be off the road at 70 at the very latest, but try telling that to my 78 year old mother.

I hope the elderly driver is alright. Only a mistake.

Frightening but please don’t start an anti age driving campaign over this one incident.

Cue the rants from the boy racers about”old fools” who should be taken off the road. In this case, however, they would be right. The man is obviously a danger and should have realised that. Some sort of test for older people is needed. I’m 72 and recognise that my reflexes are getting slower and drive accordingly. When my family and friends tell me to buy a trike – I will.

Poor old boy he must have been frightened at all those cars coming towards him. Motorways are definitely not roads for the elderly, but approaches and so many signs can confuse so they should stick to their own local areas.

I can see the comments now the hysteria of anyone over the age of 60/70 being banned from driving. The issue is not one of age but of ability, skill and health none of which are confined to those below an age selection process that has no meaning. Indeed on the whole my concerns would be the general arrogance and intolerance of many younger drivers.

Under the circumstances, I think the kindest and safest thing to do is to take the driving licence off the gentleman, and explain that his driving days are over.

Mandatory eye tests every two years, and retake the driving test every 10. Keep everyone up to a safe standard.

Yet another elderly driver who shouldn’t be on the roads, never having passed a driving test probably either.
There should be mandatory testing, including competence to drive for over 70’s.
