NZ parking ‘spy car’ gets clamped

Wellington’s controversial parking “spy car” has been axed for “corroding” the city council’s reputation with motorists.

Over 18 months the car – a roving Toyota Yaris with a camera mounted on the dashboard – had dished out 17,000 tickets worth $900,000. Wellington City Council believed it was doing a good job.

But it attracted complaints and at least two court cases as people argued its operator had mistakenly photographed them when they were not breaking any laws.

Council infrastructure director Stavros Michael said on Saturday the car had attracted criticism of parking enforcement policies.

A review of its operation this year also looked at possible changes to the way it was operating.

However, a decision was made to pull it off the road permanently.

“Its presence on the road has been corrosive for the council in terms of reputation,” Mr Michael said.

But he warned that the decision “should not signal a free-for-all for motorists intent on dangerous or inconsiderate parking around the city”.

Mr Michael said the camera car had done good work in problem areas around Wellington.

“It was very unpopular among cab drivers who parked illegally on bus stops and double-parked in narrow CBD streets. It also helped tackle dangerous ‘stop-and-drop’ parking practices outside schools.”

Mr Stavros denied the car was introduced simply to boost revenue.
