NYE revellers target prime harbour spots

With just hours to go before Sydney’s brash New Year’s Eve celebrations, keen revellers are already eyeing up some of the best spots in town.

Debbie Hancock and husband Terry travelled from Gosford on Friday to bag one of the many areas around the harbour with a cracking view of the fireworks.

“We used to come to Sydney every year when we were younger and absolutely loved it,” Ms Hancock said.

“So we thought we’d relive our youth and do it properly – by getting in position early.”

The pair said they would be up at 6am (AEST) on Saturday to take a blanket and a well-stocked esky down to the harbourside in Balmain.

They are expected to be joined by hundreds of thousands more revellers through the day, as final preparations for the annual extravaganza begin.

In total more than 1.5 million people are expected to gather around the foreshore by midnight to see the sky above the Harbour Bridge light up with seven tonnes of colourful explosives.

Many more across Australia and around the world will watch on television.

Organisers have revealed that cloud shaped fireworks will form a central part of this year’s celebrations, along with double squares, butterflies and strobing waterfalls.

The theme for the night is: Time to Dream.

The Harbour Bridge pylons will say “Welcome to Sydney” in 16 languages, including the tongue of the indigenous Gadigal people, the traditional owners of the land around central Sydney.

A four-colour “endless rainbow” will then adorn the bridge as part of the Time To Dream logo.

Meanwhile, the 9pm fireworks at Darling Harbour will be accompanied by a soundtrack including Darwin songstress Jessica Mauboy.

The weather for Saturday is expected be mild with temperatures in the mid 20s.
