Nurses to march on Oakeshott’s office

Nurses will march on federal independent MP Rob Oakeshott’s NSW electoral office urging him not to support the federal government’s move to means test the private health insurance rebate.

The government is seeking to limit the 30 per cent rebate and increase the Medicare levy surcharge for those without private health cover.

The Coalition has opposed the changes, which will allow a means test for individuals earning more than $80,000 and couples earning more than $160,000.

However, the government is likely to get the support of three crossbenchers, including Mr Oakeshott.

Nurses from Port Macquarie Private Hospital on Friday voted to march on Mr Oakeshott’s office in protest at the proposed rebate.

“We are very concerned for the future of our hospital and our jobs,” the nurses said in a statement.

“Means-testing the private health insurance rebate will lead to families dropping their cover and ultimately this will affect our jobs.”

The nurses will march on Mr Oakeshott’s office at Port Macquarie on Saturday morning.
