Nurse killed mother and snatched child ‘because she wanted a baby of her own’

The SUV reportedly ran her over as it tore out of the car park in Spring,
Texas, and Ms Golden died soon afterwards.

Police quickly linked the vehicle to McClain’s flat and were waiting when she
returned home several hours after the shooting.

They arrested her and dispatched heavily-armed officers to the nearby home of
her sister, where they found the child unharmed.

McClain has now been charged with capital murder, an offence that can carry
the death penalty in Texas.

Detectives said the victim appeared to have been chosen at random and there
was no known link between the nurse and the mother she allegedly murdered.

After the kidnapping, McClain called her sister and said that she would need
to fill out adoption papers to officially become Keegan’s mother, police
said.

Detectives initially said McClain had been accompanied by a male accomplice
but said later that she acted alone.

Her estranged husband, Theo McClain, told The Associated Press that he
couldn’t understand her actions, especially as they had two children
together and were raising a third from his previous relationship.

“That doesn’t make sense. We have three kids. And then to shoot somebody?
I’ve never known her to hurt anybody,” he said.

Keegan was taken into custody by police but not immediately released to Ms
Golden’s husband, Keith Schuchardt, because he was not listed on the child’s
birth certificate.

Authorities said they hoped to release the baby later today.

Ms Golden’s mother, Linda, said: “Me and her were really really close, we
went everywhere together, did everything together. She was my only daughter.
I don’t know what I’m going to do.”
