As of 5pm yesterday authorities reported 18 fires were active in Queensland.
FIREFIGHTERS experienced one of their busiest days ever at the weekend, after battling a large number of fires all over the Rockhampton and Gladstone regions.
Severe weather conditions were the major cause behind the number of blazes in the area, as firefighters constantly patrolled and tried to contain fires over most of the weekend.
On Saturday afternoon, residents in the Cawarral area were warned to activate their bushfire plans as a grassfire had spread from near Artillery Rd and Old Byfield Rd in Barmoya. The fire broke out about 10.30am and was moving towards Yeppoon Rd. The fire continued to burn into the night, ending up near Mt Jim Crow and Dairy Inn Rd.
Assistant Commissioner for the Central Region Neil Gallant said the fire was brought under control on Saturday night as the wind dropped.
However, yesterday afternoon the fire had jumped its containment lines and again caused road closures on Yeppoon Rd.
Mr Gallant said all crews in the region were either out fighting the blazes or on standby over the two days.
“Because of the high fuel loads, which was such a large amount from the wet season we had this year, in combination with the dry weather, was why there were so many in the area,” Mr Gallant said.
“And Saturday there was very strong wind strength and incredibly low humidity at around 5% to 7%, which are the key ingredients for bushfires.”
Although Mr Gallant said yesterdayhad better weather conditions, emergency services were busy responding to numerous fires breaking out across the region.
“The weather conditions look to improve but we’re not out of the woods yet,” he said.
Road closures were put in place on both Saturday and Sunday for Yeppoon Rd, with heavy smoke being a hazard for drivers.
However, exhausted fire crews working around the clock were given some relief after a strike team from Mackay and Brisbane were flown in yesterday to aid with co-ordination and attending the blazes.
Ergon Energy workers were also kept busy yesterday after the main high voltage supply line power poles at Mt Morgan were burnt down, leaving 6000 residents without power.
Corporate communications manager Bob Pleash said the situation was dealt with as quickly as possible.
“Areas including Gracemere, Bouldercombe, Mt Morgan, Kabra and Stanwell were out of power at about 9.15am. Power was restored around 9.45am.”
