NSW teachers vote for 24-hour strike

Teachers across NSW are to stage a 24-hour strike next week to protest against state government plans to give principals more power.

The NSW Teachers Federation’s 300-member executive voted on Friday afternoon to embark on an all-day strike on Wednesday.

The industrial action will include a meeting at 11am (AEST), a spokeswoman for the union told AAP.

“It’s a 24-hour industrial action with a meeting as part of that,” she said.

The union has defied a call from the NSW Industrial Relations Commission for it to “reconsider” its plan for industrial action.

Teachers are upset at the government’s Local Schools, Local Decisions policy, which proposes to give principals the power to control 70 per cent of a school’s budget and hire up to half of its staff.

Teachers walked off the job for two hours on May 18 to protest against the proposed changes.

If next week’s strike goes ahead, teachers are expected to meet at Sydney Town Hall.

Industrial Relations Commission vice-president Michael Walton held a mediation session between the Teachers Federation and the NSW Department of Education on Thursday.

He unsuccessfully urged the union’s executive committee to reconsider plans for industrial action.
