NSW taxi fares go up

NSW taxi fares will go up more than three-and-a-half per cent after a recommendation by the independent pricing regulator.

The Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) recommended increases of 3.7 per cent for urban taxis and 3.6 per cent for country taxis in a report released on Tuesday.

The government said it had taken up the recommendations and the fare increases would take effect from July 22.

“I have accepted IPART’s recommendations relating to the level of increases that should apply to the maximum taxi fares,” NSW Director-General Les Wielinga wrote in a letter to IPART CEO James Cox.

In its report, the pricing regulator said the fare increases were based on changes in the costs faced by the industry, including labour and fuel.

“The costs that contributed most to these increases were labour costs (reflecting the general increase in wages in the economy) and fuel costs,” the report said.

Another major contributor to the hiked fares was a rise in insurance costs, it said.

A NSW government spokeswoman said the price rises meant that the addition of 72 cents to a $20 fare in country areas and 74 cents in urban areas.

“There will be no changes to the night time surcharge or the Sunday and public holiday surcharge,” the spokeswoman said.

“Transport for NSW has accepted these increases, which have mainly been driven by labour, LPG fuel and insurance costs.”
