NSW school management to get firing rights

School management boards will be given the power to fire underperforming teachers under federal government education reforms.

In a move that will break the long-standing deadlock about whether principals can hire and fire, school management will be given free rein on recruitment and management of teachers, News Limited reported on Saturday.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard is expected to announce the reforms ahead of the release of the Gonski review of school funding, which is expected next week.

The national reforms, which will need to be agreed to state by state, will be rolled out in NSW and Queensland – the first states to sign up.

The O’Farrell government will be offered $12 million in return for signing the policy.
