NSW residents are reminded to pay their overdue traffic fines before the end of the month when tougher penalties are imposed.
NSW Finance Minister Greg Pearce said more than $571 million worth of overdue fines remain outstanding and now was the time to pay them.
“If fines continue to go unpaid, tougher penalties can and will be imposed and may include suspension of a driver’s licence, seizure of assets or having wages garnished to recover the debt,” Mr Pearce said in a statement.
Mr Pearce said an average of 23,000 drivers have had their licences suspended every month for the past the year because of unpaid fines.
“That’s around 273,000 drivers who had to suffer the inconvenience of making other transport arrangements until they paid up,” he said.
“If you can’t afford to clear a debt with a one-off payment, arrangements can be made to pay fines by instalments and this will also get the benefit of the moratorium.”
